Case study: Odfjell
Cutting costs and emissions through engine upgrades
Climate change and new emissions regulations have prompted fleet operators to make their machinery more efficient.
Odfjell didn’t want to just comply with regulations: it aimed to lead the way.
Reducing its impact on the environment would entail major upgrades to its engines – a huge undertaking involving multiple teams.
Odfjell asked us to optimize its BOW SUN
engine for initial upgrades.
We worked closely together to understand
their specific requirements, and to design a tailored solution.
We then modified the engine’s shims, exhaust, VIT parameters and cylinder liner insulation.
And we upgraded turbocharger components including the nozzle ring and compressor wheel.
As well as reducing emissions, Odfjell saved time and money by dealing with a single point of contact at ABB Turbocharging.
And this is just the beginning. The success of the upgrades has encouraged Odfjell to continue partnering with us to upgrade its remaining seven ships.
- 20% LESS NOX EMISSIONS
- 3% LESS CO2 EMISSIONS
We are very pleased with ABB’s cooperation and the results we have achieved from our energy efficiency upgrades. The upgrades are comprehensive and have comprised many activities. During the last few years, Odfjell has improved the energy efficiency of our managed fleet by 30%.
